Spend five seconds counting before you write anything. Start with whichever digit appears most.
- A digit appearing 7 times has two placements left and already blocks seven rows and seven columns. It is often forced immediately in both remaining boxes.
- A digit appearing 5 times usually yields one or two placements per pass.
- A digit appearing 2 times blocks almost nothing. Hunting it early is close to guaranteed wasted effort.
Re-count after each full pass. Your own placements change the order, so a digit that started at four may now be the best target.
Habit 3: ride the chain
Every digit you write changes exactly three regions: its row, its column and its box. The next available placement is very often inside one of those three.
Beginners place a digit and then restart scanning from the top-left corner, throwing away the information they just created. Fast solvers check the three affected regions first, every time. On easy and medium grids this produces cascades — one placement unlocking four or five more in a few seconds.
Habit 4: the eight-second rule
If a box has held your attention for more than about eight seconds with no placement, the information you need is not there. Move on.
This is the single largest time saver available, and it feels wrong at first. The instinct is to keep looking because you have already invested attention — psychologists call it perseveration. The grid does not care. Either the constraints are present or they are not.
Count to eight deliberately for the first week. After that the urge to move on becomes automatic.
Habit 5: delay pencil marks
Marking every empty cell on an easy grid costs sixty to ninety seconds of writing before you place a single digit, and you will never use most of those marks.
- Pass one: pure cross-hatching, no marks. Sweep all nine digits in frequency order.
- Pass two: the same sweep again. The grid is fuller, so ambiguous cells are now forced. Easy Sudoku usually ends here.

Habit 6: read bands, not boxes
Look at three boxes side by side — a horizontal band or a vertical stack. Because a digit appears once per row across the whole band, two boxes frequently force the third.

A hidden single is a digit that can only go in one cell of a row, column or box — even if that cell could also accept other digits. It is the most productive placement type in Sudoku, and it is invisible if you read cell by cell. Scanning digit by digit is what exposes it, which is why cross-hatching and hidden singles are really the same habit seen from two angles.
Naked pairs, spotted as shapes
Two cells in the same unit holding exactly the same two candidates consume both digits between them, so those digits leave every other cell in that unit. On a marked grid a naked pair is a visual shape, not an arithmetic check — provided you always write candidates in the same positions inside the cell. Fixed-position marking turns a comparison into a glance.
Pointing pairs, read across the band
If a digit inside one box can only sit in one row of that box, it is eliminated from that row in the two neighbouring boxes. Reading bands rather than boxes makes this pattern jump out. It is the technique that turns a stalled medium grid back into a scannable one, and most solvers who plateau are simply not looking for it.
Building speed without building errors
Speed practice has a failure mode: you get faster at placing wrong digits. These four rules keep accuracy intact while the clock comes down.
- Never time yourself in week one or two. Timing early rewards guessing, and guessing is the one habit that cannot be unlearned cheaply.
- Erase candidates in the same movement as writing a digit. Strike it from the row, the column and the box immediately. A stale mark is the most common cause of a contradiction on medium and hard grids.
- Write small, consistent digits. A 1 that looks like a 7 causes an error that surfaces ten placements later where you cannot trace it. This is not a style preference; it is error prevention.

- Mark efficiently, not exhaustively. Mark the emptiest unit first and extend only as far as the logic needs. A fully marked grid takes ninety seconds you may not need.
- Scan by digit for two-position units. Any unit where a digit has exactly two possible cells feeds X-Wing, colouring and every chain technique. Finding these is faster than hunting patterns blind.
- Check boxes against lines before anything exotic. Pointing pairs and box-line reduction crack most hard-rated grids, and they are far quicker to spot than a Swordfish.
- Accept the stall. Long pauses are normal at expert level. Ten minutes with no placement does not mean you are doing it wrong; it means the grid requires an elimination you have not found yet.
